The manga series is a modern retelling of Tezuka’s Astro Boy story arc “The Greatest Robot on Earth.” It was first serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original magazine from Septemto April 4, 2009, with eight total volumes released. Pluto is based on the manga series by Urasawa, with Nagasaki credited as co-author and Osamu Tezuka’s son, Macoto Tezka, serving as the manga’s supervisor. Maruyama had previously produced adaptations of Urasawa’s works such as Monster and Master Keaton at Madhouse. Studio M2 will be in charge of the animation production for the series, with Masao Maruyama and Takashi Nagasaki serving as producers. Shinshuu Fuji will voice the protagonist Gesicht. Hikasa and Suzuki will voice Astro/Atom and Uran, respectively. In the background, a looming shadow of the antagonist, Pluto, can be seen. The visual depicts the original manga’s central characters, including Gesicht, Atom, Epsilon, North #2, Brau 1589, Hercules, and Mont Blanc. The visual was revealed at Netflix’s AnimeJapan 2023 event, which featured Urasawa, Macoto Tezka, Youko Hikasa, and Minori Suzuki. Netflix has revealed a brand new key visual for its upcoming anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa‘s Pluto, drawn by Urasawa himself.
